DESCRIPTION
Peony (牡丹, mǔdān) is often called the "king of flowers." It's tied to wealth, honor, and high social rank. It's also a common symbol of romantic love and feminine beauty, appearing frequently in wedding imagery and gifts for good fortune.
The peony is hand-painted onto the hide, with the surrounding detail built from individually punched holes — the same technique used to create light and shadow in traditional wayang puppets. [Hide type — water buffalo or calf leather] with an oxen horn handle. Expect natural variation piece to piece, as with all handcrafted pieces in this collection.

Hand-painted, hand-carved
Each piece is made by artisans who have been trained to create shadow puppets with a rigorous 6-step process.
Sustainably & Ethically Made
We use natural fibers and recycled fabrics while supporting local artisans and responsible production.
Our fans are made in a studio that is on the outskirts of Yogyakarta & part of the industrial craft area of Bantul, Central Java. The village is known to produce traditional leather shadow puppets.
Wayang shadow puppetry is considered the highest forms of art & story-telling in Indonesia. The puppets are held between a source of light and a translucent screen.
Process: the hide is sanded down, cut and punctured, one hole at a time, to create the details of the fan. Afterwards, they are painted, flattened and sewn onto oxen horns.
Although the 10 artisans we work with are all trained to do every part of the process, it is always a collaborative effort where they each take ownership of one step of the process.
The water buffalo hide we use are byproducts of the meat industry in Boyolali, a 2 hour drive from the village of Klumprit where the fans are made.
