ABOUT RAXADA PROJECT

An archival image of the women from Asturia harvesting seaweed by the coast. They’ve had a crucial role in shaping & sustaining the industry. A beautiful technique that is becoming extinct is dyeing nets & fabrics with seaweed. My desire is to revive methodologies related to my cultural roots.

The women, specifically that of rederas, invented a special technique of knitting fish nets and we have been exploring how to transform their technique into beautiful garments.

Another intention of this project is to explore how to blend different sustainable fabrics such as silk with linen, recycled bamboo, recycled nylon and upcycled antique curtains.

Mythological tales share a glimpse of Asturia’s ethos and the wisdom of our ancestors. We draw inspirations from how our ancient legends dress, as a way to connect with their spirits.

The creative process of each piece also involves the collaboration between young artists and artisans (some that are even in their 80s and have been doing this since they were young). We try to provide a contemporary context for artisans to keep practicing their craft.
